Here are some tips for praying the Prayer of Descent
1. Find a quiet place
2. Do not bring your phone
- if you need it for a timer or for music, put it on airplane mode
3. Sit down and get comfortable, let your body & mind become still
4. Pray & repeat these three simple prayers
Jesus, thank you that you are here.
Help me to tune into your presence within me.
I love you Jesus, Restore our union
Repeat these words leaving some time for quiet between each repetition
and from that place of quiet, add the following words too.
Jesus I give everyone and everything to you, God.
I give everyone and everything to you.
This is not a time for typical prayer, not a time to get caught up in a shopping list of requests, this is a time dedicated to one thing only, communion with God. Take time to name all the things and people you’re carrying at the moment, the welcome and unwelcome stuff of life.
This 2nd prayer is taken from John Eldredge’s book ‘Experience Jesus Really’ and it’s corresponding material features on the Pause App. We have found it helpful and highly recommend it to you.
In this stage, please keep asking for the Spirit’s help as your attention comes and goes. Learn to linger here, asking God for his strength.
Finally then in closing, take time to pray & repeat this third prayer.
Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit, fill the depths of my being.
Standing with you now, in you now, I pray for supernatural resilience and a strength that prevails, as I trust in you.
Amen.
