We are really looking forward to all God will do and say as we fast together next week. Whether you are fasting for the first time or are very used to doing it, I wanted write to encourage you with a few simple reflections.
1. Start small. This is especially true for anyone fasting for the first time. Don’t go from no fasting to attempting to fast for a whole week. Maybe start with fasting one meal a day. Then a few days later, try fasting for two meals a day, and work your way up to a daylong fast by the end of the week. Maybe try a two-day juice fast.
2. Plan what you’ll do instead of eating. Before starting a fast, make a simple plan and connect it to your purpose for the fast. Each fast should have a specific spiritual purpose. Identify what that is and design a focus to replace the time you would have spent eating. Without a purpose and plan, it’s not fasting; it’s just going hungry.
3. Fast from something other than food. Fasting from food is not something that is possible for everyone. Some health conditions keep even the most committed from trying. But, fasting is not and should not be limited to just abstaining from food. Try different kinds of fasting. Take something up, read a book, give up TV, the radio or using your phone for anything other than important calls.
